Press round-up: We're making waves around the world
Last week was a big week for Connect to Learn: we launched our website and an international initiative to ensure that every child in the world has access to compulsory and quality education.
The Connect to Learn team was ecstatic to get the project off the ground, and especially to see so many people talking about the initiative. Below are a few of the media highlights:
Trina Yannicos wrote a great piece in The Examiner about Madonna's trip to Africa and gave an overview of the initiative:
"Madonna has also teamed up with the Earth Institute, Ericsson and Millennium Promise for a new global education initiative aimed at supporting access to primary and secondary education for every child in the world, with an emphasis on girls' secondary schooling. The initiative--Connect To Learn--will provide secondary school scholarships, with a special focus on girls, and implement information and communications technology ("ICT") in schools, enhancing the overall quality and availability of the education."
Reuters (via NYTimes.com) also wrote about the launch of Connect to Learn:
"Madonna also will visit the Millennium Village -- a United Nations (Development Program)-backed project to fight poverty -- along with economist Jeffrey Sachs and CEO of consumer electronics firm Ericsson Hans Vestberg. She and Vestberg will formally announce an education campaign on Tuesday."
We're also excited to see the initiative making waves in the African Press. From Chancy Namadzunda in the Africa News:
"The Connect to Learn Initiative aims at increasing awareness and raising funds through online giving, corporate partnerships and foundation investments. The funds will provide secondary school scholarships and will also expand a program of school-to-school partnerships, connecting students through the Internet with counterparts in classrooms around the world."
Thanks to all of those who contributed to make Connect to Learn come together last week. We look forward to further spreading the word about getting education to the children who need it -- and if you have a few seconds, you can even help us spread the word yourself!
